The Changeling

So good!

PLOT

John Russell loses his wife and daughter in a car crash and moves to a new town, taking a new job and hoping to put that all behind him. One of the workers for the historical society offers him a great deal (I wish I had a deal like this!) on a rental property they own because no one else wants it. Weird things start happening that seem like a typical poltergeist. Russell learns that a young boy was murdered in the house and has ties to a wealthy local family, who’s other son is now a senator.

TRIVIA

Russell Hunter, who wrote the screenplay claims that he based it on actual events that happened to him. He says that the same odd things happened to him in a house he rented in Denver and that the poltergeist went with him when he moved.

THOUGHTS

I have to admit that I’ve never seen The Changeling before, but I couldn’t resist it when I saw it for around $3. Now I’m shocked that I waited so long because this movie is really good. I wish modern day directors could pick up some old tips and learn how to make a suspenseful ghost story that doesn’t rely on “shocks”. That said, there are some parts of the movie that aren’t so great and it gets a little slow at times. It also has some age and it doesn’t hold up that great to the years, but it’s still a damn good movie.
